When someone passes away, their estate often goes through a legal process called probate. In Washington State, probate can seem intimidating at first—but not every case requires hiring an attorney. If the probate is uncontested and there is a valid Will, a personal representative can often handle much of the process on their own with the right guidance.
Probate is essentially the court-supervised process of settling a person’s affairs after they pass away. This includes confirming the Will, identifying assets, paying debts, and distributing what’s left to the rightful beneficiaries. In Washington, the probate process is designed to be relatively straightforward, and for simple or uncontested estates, it can often be managed without full legal representation.
That said, it’s still important to have a clear roadmap. Even if no one is disputing the Will, you’ll need to understand what forms to file, which deadlines to meet, and how to properly transfer assets to heirs. Missing a step could cause unnecessary delays or confusion.
That’s why I created Welcome to Probate—a self-guided program for personal representatives who are managing an uncontested probate in Washington State. The course provides practical guidance, forms, and explanations to help you confidently navigate the process from start to finish. You’ll learn how to open probate, fulfill your duties as a personal representative, handle debts and taxes, and distribute the estate properly.
Probate without an attorney is absolutely possible in Washington when things are straightforward. With the right direction and resources, you can manage the process efficiently while ensuring that everything is handled the right way.
